Georgia Stitt & Friends
June 2nd, 2007
El Portal Theatre, NoHo
Concert w/Broadway SingersI have to start by saying, we went to this concert expressly to see Shoshana Bean, one of Broadway's (nearly) unsung extremely-talented singers. We'd seen her in the orginal cast of HAIRSPRAY (twice), and she was a real standout in its periphery. I only wish I'd had a chance to get back to NYC to see her in WICKED when she took over Elphaba from Idina Menzel.
Georgia Stitt is very sweet, and you can just tell she has the kind of wit that's bound to surprise you from underneath her engaging veneer. Her songs are a bit like that as well. It was a nice assortment of voices to complement her songs, most notably Shoshana, Susan Eagan, Jean Louisa Kelly and Kathleen Monteleone, four very gifted performers.
It's always wonderful to see Susan Eagan... a strong and consistant Broadway talent, but I have to say, the moment Shoshana stepped onto the stage, her voice took command. She sang this stirring and darkly introspective song called "It Almost Felt Like Love" ~ which paints an emotionally painful and sad story of the scars having an affair can leave on both persons ~from the adulteress' perspective. It's a very human and honest and empathetic song, and I felt it was Georgia's best song of the night. And Shoshana made the moment both captivating and vocally evocative.
