Starring: Kerry Butler as Lizzie, Daniel Tatar as Danny, Alice Ripley as Pam, Graham Rowat as Nick, Faith Prince as Arlene and Christopher McDonald as Alan. Directed by Kevin Chamberlin.
Another wonderful evening. With this calibre of talent, we didn't miss sets for this concert performance of the Maltby & Shire favorite. I had low expectations, but left with a new appreciation for the songs. The cast sung the hell out of them.
Faith Prince was funny and as always, expressive and touching. Alice was funny and spirited and her vocals (which I'd compare to a young Betty Buckley) were exciting and lovely. We expected all of that. Thrilling. The surprise was Kerry Butler's silvery clear soprano ~ surprising in its strength and fluidity. We'd seen her on Broadway in Hairspray (twice) and also in "Little Shop of Horrors." Her voice was in wonderful form last night. As was Daniel Tatar (whom we'd seen in "Elegies"). Can't wait to see him in more things. A solid, strong and expressive pop-tenor, in complete command.
Another wonderful evening at Reprise!

Ha, I was there that night and was so sure you'd be that I almost screamed "Is Shephard in the house?" just so we could meet. I was talking to Marcia Wallace, who is a family friend, so maybe we DID meet! I saw the original "Baby" on Broadway and was very anxious to see this since it is rarely produced. I enjoyed it a lot, espeically Prince, Butler, and Tatar, but the play seemed more depressing than I remembered it (maybe because now I'm in the middle of fertility issues and then I sure wasn't). I was flabbergasted to realize that I was the age of the man of the OLD couple. When I saw it in the 80s I thought they were positively ancient--not just in their 40s! I thought some of the songs creaked a bit but I always loved "I Want it All" and all of Lizzie's songs. I especially remember wonderful Liz Callaway and Todd Graff from the original cast and ironically, the very next night, went to see the play that Todd Graff is currently directing at the Mark Taper, "Thirteen" starring a bunch of 13-year-olds. Have you seen that yet? Quite good, but not as biting as the last all-kids musical I saw on Broadway, "Runaways" in the late 70s.
