Elegies: A Song Cycle

September 11, 2006
Reprise!, UCLA
Musical

Starring:
Liz Callaway, Malcolm Gets, Randy Graff, Daniel Tatar and Amick Byram
Written by William Finn (Falsettos, A New Brain, 25th Annual...Spelling Bee).

William Finn's song cycle Elegies is about life and death, and about the effects people have on you. Specifically, the people Mr. Finn wrote all these songs about, and also the experience of 9/11.

I have to say I was unexpectedly moved and touched.
And it doesn't get any better than Liz Callaway and Randy Graff, two noteworth Broadway verterans who never disappoint.

When Randy Graff (a woman, btw) sang Infinite Joy her resonant violin of a voice soared and soothed and enthrawled. It filled the theatre from wall to wall. And Liz, with her silvery soprano was equally powerful and engaging. It was Daniel's song, about the experience of Will Finn's mother passing away, called "When the Earth Stopped Turning," that really touched me.
So much so I did a whole post on it at my main blog (click *here*).

"Make a Parade of Every Moment."
I don't think I'll be forgetting that lyric any time soon.

Wonderful evening of sparkling talent and beautiful music.
