Dorian the Musical

Musical, we went with Troy
The Oscar Wilde book becomes a musical, but is now set in turn-of-the-century New Orleans, which works beautifully for the spiraling decadence of Dorian's decline. Throw in some inter-racial romance, a nude scene, lots of Mardi Gras color, unrequited gay love and a spooooky painting, and you have an intriguing night of theatre.
The reason for the half star: 3 words: Max Von Essen. Seeing him reprise this role was a real thrill. Though the musical was a bit over-long, our attentions didn't wane because the music itself held our attention. Strong, catchy songs, good melodies with beautiful harmonies and solid singers. And I can't forget to mention seeing Armelia "Ain't Misbehavin'" McQueen. She was wonderful --her stage presence filled the little 100 seat theatre.
Bottom line: the musical needs polish, but far lesser productions end up on Broadway. Great evening and our first introduction to NoHo Arts Center Theatre.
