The Royal Family

April 13th, 2004
Ahmanson, Los Angeles
Play

This was our first real production in Los Angeles, and we were beyond happily surprised. With a cast like Kate Mulgrew, Charles Kimbrough and Marian Seldes, it was more than solid. The set was just over-the-top-gorgeous. Used to scaled back sets on Broadway, we were visually overwhelmed.
The play is described as follows:

"A fond and engaging send-up of the more legendary aspects of the off-stage life of the famous Barrymore family, The Royal Family has become a classic of the American theatre ever since its premiere in 1927. The Royal Family tells the uproarious story of the Cavendishes, an old and celebrated “First Family” of the theatre. It is a warmhearted and knowing portrait that lives and breathes in the grand tradition of the stage.... a rich story of a family whose love for the theatre was so great that it could not possibly get the greasepaint out of its blood."

The play was light-hearted and frisky, and often very funny. Kate Mulgrew was wonderful.

A rather appropriate beginning for what we hope will be a long and fruitful relationship with theatre in Los Angeles.
